Music Ministry

“God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. God dwells within each person, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises.” (Sing to the Lord 1)

Music at Our Lady Star of the Sea consists of a variety of ensembles and styles. People of all ages, talents, and skill level are welcome to join in this important ministry which enhances the prayer life of our church. To get involved in music ministry, please contact the music minister at 313-884-5554 ext 2121. You can also stop by the piano to chat after any Mass or send a message using the link at the bottom of the page.

OLSOS Choir

The OLSOS Choir ministers to the parish at the 11:30 liturgy and holy day liturgies (Christmas, All Saints, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Easter). The choir is open to singers high school age and up. No previous singing experience is required. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings 7:00pm – 8:30pm in the choir room, with occasional rehearsals 7:00pm - 9:00pm.

Christmas and Easter Choir

Singers are invited to sing in the Adult Choir for Christmas and Holy Week/Easter. This involves a short-term commitment to the choir with only 4-5 weeks of rehearsals. This is a great way to get involved for singers who cannot commit to a full year in the choir.

Men’s Schola

The Men’s Schola sings at two liturgies a year: All Souls Day and Good Friday. The group is open to all men of the parish and meets only a few weeks before each liturgy to prepare music.

Veterans Day Concert

Each year we host a Veterans Day Concert featuring a choir to lead patriotic hymns and learn other American songs. This is a fun non-liturgical choir open to other parishes and the surrounding community. This group begins rehearsing on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30pm four weeks prior to the concert on or around Veterans Day.

Youth Chorale and Schola

These two after school programs are open to students at Our Lady Star of the Sea School. The Youth Chorale is for students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade and the Schola is for middle school students. These ensembles are directed by Mrs. Jennifer Koester, the school music teacher. More information can be found at her classroom site: https://olsosmusic.weebly.com/

Cantors

Cantors are scheduled monthly and rehearse individually with the music minister before each Mass. The cantor sings the psalm and helps lead congregational song.

Instrumentalists

Instruments add beauty and embellishment to our liturgies. Many instruments are welcome (flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, violin, cello, saxophone, etc.). Instrumentalists are scheduled individually and coordinated with the music minister.

New Ideas Welcome

Do you have an interest or talent not listed above? Would you like to make music as a family, sing with a friend, or form a small ensemble? Do you want to form a band, string quartet, chant schola, a cappella group, or….? New ideas are encouraged and welcome.
